Our story

Birding gave us our heads back. We built BirdMate to share it.

BirdMate is a small, independent team building the calmest way to notice the world around you — one bird at a time.

Why we created BirdMate

Hi — we're the BirdMate team. We didn't start with a business plan. We started with a feeling a lot of people know: overstimulated, scattered, glued to a screen, and quietly worn out.

One of us picked up birdwatching almost by accident — and noticed something shift. Ten minutes outside, paying attention to a single bird, did what no meditation app ever managed. Calmer. Clearer. More present.

The problem was that every birding app treated it like a science exam, not a way to feel better. So we built the one we wished existed: a companion that teaches you gently, asks nothing of you, and turns a short walk into the reset your mind's been asking for.

What we believe

The principles behind everything we build.

Calm over noise

No streaks, no guilt, no endless feeds. Just a quiet space to notice things.

Teach, don't just tell

We explain the why behind every bird, so you actually learn.

You, not advertisers

No ads, ever. You're the user, never the product.

Welcoming to everyone

No jargon, no gatekeeping. Wherever you're starting from is fine.

Built with people who know birds

BirdMate's identifications and explanations are developed with input from working ornithologists and experienced birders. We're committed to getting the birds right — and to explaining them in plain language anyone can follow.

Reviewed by ornithologists

Real expertise behind every ID and explanation.

Grounded in nature science

Built on the documented mental-health benefits of time outdoors.

Always improving

Every sighting helps us make BirdMate more accurate and more helpful.

You're not alone in this

Birdwatching is now one of the fastest-growing ways people are choosing to slow down — up 47% in the last eight years, and more than tenfold among people in their twenties. Millions are quietly trading the scroll for the sky. We're building BirdMate for all of them — and for you.
